Buckley grew up in California with his mother, moving constantly, keeping his belongings in paper bags. He finally met his father, ’60s folk star Tim Buckley, just before he died of a drug overdose in 1975. The press always noted that Buckley had his father’s melancholy good looks and his talent.
Buckley’s debut, 1994’s “Grace,” veered from woeful ballads to wailing rock. In concert, his rich tenor climbedunearthly heights, and girls fainted. But somehow he remained sweet and very shy–he’d play pool with fans but wouldn’t let them take pictures. Last year Buckley toured under a fake name and agonized over a second album. “I’m going through some wild s–t,” he told his Internet fans. “Please be patient.” He was finally set to record in June. He was on his way to rehearse when he stopped for a swim.
