RELATED: The Best Co-Op Games To Play After Beating It Takes Two

A Way Out is replayable and can end in two different ways. The player’s choices in their playthrough will determine the outcomes. While the route to find both versions of A Way Out’s ending are similar, they each provide their own story that ties up the loose ends of the adventure.

Updated January 12, 2023, by Michael Llewellyn: A Way Out is included as part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription and EA Play. It remains one of the best couch coop experiences available, and thanks to its twists and multiple endings are worth playing again. This guide has been updated to include a quicker way to see Leo and Vincent’s end scenarios without starting the game from the beginning.

The Story Thus Far

The main characters of A Way Out are Vincent Moretti and Leonard “Leo” Caruso. These convicted felons end up meeting and bonding over their connection to Harvey, a crime boss who betrayed them in two completely different situations.

Vincent said Harvey made him launder money. According to him, Harvey then killed Vincent’s brother Gary and framed him for it. Leo explains how he and Harvey stole a gem called the Black Orlov. After attempting to sell it, Harvey killed the buyer and ran away, leaving Leo to get caught.

Leo and Vincent work together to break out of the jail by collecting tools around the prison. Once out, they begin their life on the run by surviving alone out in the woods and then getting supplies from an older couple’s home.

The protagonists initiate a plan to find Harvey’s whereabouts, which they do by confronting Harvey’s subordinate - Ray - at a construction site. They find out that Harvey is in Mexico and begin stocking up on weapons in preparation for hunting him down. Once they fly, a firefight ensues, leading to them killing Harvey and obtaining the Black Orlov.

Ending Criteria

Near the end of the game, players discover that Vincent has been an undercover cop, using Leo to retrieve the Black Orlov and get justice for his fallen brother Gary, who was also undercover and was the buyer in that potential sale. This leads to a wild sequence where Leo takes Vincent hostage, and the two tussle enough to cause their car to go off a bridge. After surviving, Leo begins getting away on a boat while Vincent chases him on a helicopter. The two end up catching up in a warehouse leading to a gunfight.

From here, the A Way Out ending rests on who survives the fight. The person that deals the most damage throughout has the advantage of who wins. During the final sequence, an injured Leo and Vincent will be disarmed when trying to reach the gun. Whoever reaches it first will deal the final blow to their former ally. A final sequence will show what happens after the altercation is over.

Using Chapter Reload To Unlock Both Endings

A Way Out is a replayable experience and worth playing through again with or without a cooperative partner. It has the feel of a blockbuster crime movie with twists and turns in the plot, great voice acting, and never overstays its welcome. However, the less patient player doesn’t need to replay the entire game to see the alternative ending. The quickest method to watch Leo’s and Vincent’s endings are to reload the final chapter and play through the sequence again.

Leo’s Ending

If Leo is the one to shoot Vincent, there will be a scene that plays out where Vincent asks Leo to deliver one last letter to his wife. As Vincent’s side of the screen fades to black, the players watch Leo walk away.

Cut to sometime later as Leo delivers the letter without showing his face to Carol, and the players hear Vincent’s voice reading out the letter as she reads it. Leo reunites with his wife Linda and their son Alex as they begin to pack and set off to parts unknown. The A Way Out ending comes to a close with a scene showing Leo driving away while Vincent’s funeral takes place - at the same time.

Vincent’s Ending

If Vincent is the one to end the fight, Leo will collapse, and Vincent will hold his hand as his betrayed partner passes away. Sometime after the altercation, Vincent visits Linda and Alex to break the news about his death. In grief, Linda will kick Vincent out of her trailer.

Later, Vincent will return to his home to amend things with Carol. He tells her that he has decided to quit the police force to spend time with her and their newborn child. After Carol invites Vincent inside, the final scene of A Way Out ending shows Linda and Alex visiting Leo’s grave as they grieve over his death.

A Way Out is available now for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It’s also compatible with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
